How it works in Victoria
Victoria pairs smoke alarm rules with the country's broadest rental safety-check regime. Alarms must meet AS 3786 and be hard-wired in buildings built after 1 August 1997. From 25 November 2025 a mandatory annual smoke alarm safety check applies to every rental agreement, closing the gap that previously exempted older leases. On top of that, licensed professionals must carry out gas and electrical safety checks at least every two years, and switchboards must have circuit breakers and safety switches.
